May 5th is “Tango no Sekku” or Boys’ Day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Originally, it was one of the five seasonal festivals introduced from China to ward off evil spirits. During the Sengoku period, it evolved into a celebration where samurai families would pray for their sons’ success and valor. Over time, it became a day to celebrate the healthy growth of boys. Today, it is celebrated as Children’s Day<\/a>, a national holiday that honors children’s individuality, happiness, and expresses gratitude to mothers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Celebrating Children’s Happiness<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In 1948 (Showa 23), Children’s Day was established as one of Japan’s national holidays<\/a>. According to the Holiday Law (Law No. 178 of 1948, Article 2), it is defined as a day to “respect children’s individuality, promote their happiness, and express gratitude to mothers.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

May 5th is also Tango no Sekku<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

May 5th is Tango no Sekku, a traditional Japanese celebration honoring boys’ birth and growth. Originating from China, it has evolved into a festive occasion marked by customs such as flying carp-shaped kites (koinobori), displaying samurai dolls (Gogatsu ningyo), and enjoying traditional foods like chimaki and kashiwa mochi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
